Phonics

Phonics and Early Reading at Our Lady & St. Oswald's Catholic Primary School

We use Read, Write Inc., a literacy programme developed by Ruth Miskin, to teach phonics, and early reading and writing in our Early Years class, Year 1 and for some children in Year 2. Read Write Inc. Phonics teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step. Sessions take place daily and children are taught in small groups by staff trained specifically in the programme.  All the children are regularly assessed and grouped according to their current level of phonic knowledge and skill. These groups are fluid and children will move groups throughout the year. If you would like more information about the programme, please click here
