Foundation Governor

Foundation Governor – Role Overview

We are seeking a practising Catholic to serve as a Foundation Governor on our Local Governing Body. Foundation Governors are appointed by the Bishop of Shrewsbury to ensure that the school’s Catholic character, mission and values are lived out in every aspect of school life.

What does a Foundation Governor do?
Foundation Governors work strategically with the Headteacher and other governors to:

  • Preserve and develop the Catholic ethos and mission of the school.

  • Ensure that the curriculum and wider school life reflect Catholic teaching, values and virtues.

  • Monitor key areas such as safeguarding, Catholic Life, Religious Education, Collective Worship, behaviour, attendance and achievement.

  • Support and challenge school leaders to secure the best possible outcomes for all pupils.

  • Ensure the school fulfils its responsibilities to the Bishop and Diocese in line with Canon Law and diocesan protocols.

What the role is not

  • It is not an operational role — Foundation Governors do not manage staff, make day-to-day decisions, or deal with individual complaints or pupil issues.

Who can apply?

  • Practising Catholics aged 18 or over.

  • Individuals committed to the Church’s educational mission and able to serve in a voluntary capacity.

  • The Diocese will carry out the formal appointment process.

Skills and experience
You do not need to be an expert in education. What matters most is commitment to the faith, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work well as part of a team. Training is provided by the Diocese and the Multi-Academy Trust.

Time commitment
Foundation Governors attend around six meetings per year, complete monitoring visits linked to their areas of responsibility, and read papers in advance of meetings.

If you are a practising Catholic who cares about supporting Catholic education in our community, we would warmly welcome your interest.
