Growing together with dignity and respect

At Our Lady & St Oswald’s, we help children understand how to live well with others and contribute to life in modern Britain. Our Catholic faith teaches us that every person is made in the image and likeness of God and deserves dignity and respect. Our vision, “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10), shapes the way we learn, make choices and care for our community.

We promote democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We help children connect these values with everyday experiences, using language and examples appropriate to their age and understanding.

    Democracy: every voice matters

Children learn to share their ideas, listen to different views and take part in decisions. Through class discussions and opportunities for pupil voice, including our School Council, they learn that everyone’s contribution matters. We encourage them to explain their thinking, listen fairly and understand that a shared decision may differ from their own preference.

The rule of law: fairness and responsibility

Children learn why rules and laws help protect people, keep communities safe and support fairness. Our school promises and clear routines help them understand their responsibilities and the impact of their actions. Adults model calm, fair responses and help children take responsibility, repair harm and make better choices, with support and adjustments where needed.

    Individual liberty: making thoughtful choices

We encourage children to develop their interests, express their views respectfully and grow in confidence. They learn that freedom goes alongside responsibility for themselves and others. We help them make informed, safe choices, including online, and know when to ask a trusted adult for help.

Mutual respect and tolerance: valuing every person

We are proudly Catholic and welcome families of all faiths and none. Children learn about different faiths and beliefs, ask thoughtful questions and recognise that people may hold views different from their own. We teach them to treat others with kindness and dignity, to disagree respectfully and to challenge bullying, prejudice and discrimination by seeking help and speaking up safely.

    Living our values each day

Our children’s promises — We Are Kind, We Try Our Best and We Make Safe Choices — turn these ideas into everyday habits. Adults model Connection, Confidence and Consistency, helping children practise listening, fairness, responsibility and care for others. Our Gospel values, including justice, integrity, peace and courage, help us put these commitments into action.
